Oodi was designed by ALA Architects, who won the open international architecture competition for the Central Library in 2013. The starting point was that the building should be a public, open to everyone, safe, and free of charge city space in the heart of the city.

Oodi Helsinki Central Library, ALA Architects. Opened on December 5, 2018, the Helsinki Central Library, also known as Oodi (meaning ode in Finnish), is widely regarded as one of the most exciting new public venues built in Finland in the last years. Oodi’s spatial concept based on three individual public floors is executed by building the library as an inhabited, asymmetrical bridge spanning over 100 meters over the open ground floor space. The bridge structure consisting of steel trusses and beams is supported by two massive steel arches, tensioned together with a reinforced concrete tension slab. Oodi represents a new era of libraries. It aims to enliven and diversify the urban environment in the Töölönlahti area, and offer activities and experiences for all ages. As a non-commercial indoor public space open seven days a week, the new Central Library will act as Helsinki residents’ common living room, work space and learning Oodi is Helsinki's new Central Library and a living meeting place in the city centre on the Kansalaistori Square.
The new library in the city center consists almost entirely of public spaces and offers a wide selection of services. It is a highly functional addition to the local urban life. As a non-commercial indoor public space open seven days a week, Helsinki Central Library Oodi is an inspiring and highly functional addition to Helsinki’s urban life. The building opens directly to the surrounding cityscape, and the architecture feeds curiosity that draws people inside. Oodi, the new Helsinki Central Library, was designed by Helsinki architectural firm ALA, which won the open architecture competition organised by the City of Helsinki in 2013. The main building contractor was YIT Rakennus Oy. In the architects’ mind, as a new building, Oodi must be more than the sum of its individual square metres.
It complements the cultural and media center formed by the Helsinki Music Center, Finland Hall, Sanoma House and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art. Helsinki Central Library Oodi will turn one year old on 5 December. Opened on 5 December 2018, Oodi had a successful first year, as the estimates for the number of visits have already been far exceeded.
