A strong oscillating laser field can create modulations in the electron wavefunction. The wavepacket can expand over ~10-100 hydrogen-atom sizes away from the parent ion. We review the first ten years of attosecond science with a selection of recent highlights and trends and give an outlook on future directions. After introducing the main spectroscopic tools, we give recent examples of representative experiments employing them.

This control enables a gas of atoms to produce intense VUV or soft X-ray beams. Since we can precisely control the infrared beam, we can synthesize attosecond soft X-ray pulses - pulses that are the shortest controlled events ever systematically produced. Attosecond science is a branch of strong field physics that investigates ultrafast phenomena in nature.
The Lund Attosecond Science Center (LASC) combines three collaborating research groups: Attosecond Physics: From lasers to applications (Groupleaders: Cord Arnold, Anne L'Huillier) Attosecond XUV Spectroscopy (Groupleader: Johan Mauritsson) Intense XUV Attosecond Physics (Groupleader: Per Johnsson)

In conventional attosecond streaking spectroscopy, an initial laser pulse triggers the ionization of an atom or molecule before the oscillating electric field of a second, longer-wavelength laser pulse modulates the energy of the emitted electrons. Some electrons will gain a boost in energy from the modulation, while others will lose energy.

For single-photon ionization, one such scheme is the reconstruction of attosecond harmonic beating by interference of two-photon transitions (RABBITT) 21. In RABBITT, there are two pathways that lead to the same final electron energy.

The modulations of the electron wavefunction can give birth to extreme high order harmonics spanning from the IR and visible and UV spectral region, throughout the vacuum ultrviolet, extreme ultraviolen, soft X-ray regions and potentially reaching even the hard X-ray region. Attosecond science offers formidable tools for the investigation of electronic processes at the heart of important physical processes in atomic, molecular and solid-state physics. In the last 15 years impressive advances have been obtained from both the experimental and theoretical points of view. Within the attosecond science community, the word “tunnelling time” is often used to denote very different physical phenomena, sometimes referring to the imaginary part of the ionization time (which corresponds to the decay of the wave function under the barrier), sometimes to the time it takes to develop a constant outgoing flux , or, in one instance, to the phase of ionization .
